"cool"
The idea of being cool now a day’s is over rated people use being “cool” to try to start fashion statements, popularity, and a reason to imitate. The media has a big part in the society and its version of cool. The media tries to use celebrities to show off the latest styles that suppose to be “cool”. It is not just television but also internet, video games, and music.
In a documentary we saw for class " The Merchant of Cool", they use products like Sprite, or popular television shows like on MTV, to show case how cool some things are. They use mooks to get information to find things to interest society. So, they interview mook’s to find what they think is popular, so they can use that to interest more mook’s. then find midriffs who are young girl’s that like to wear short skirts to show off curves and belly. Midriffs imitate young female celebrities that show off their bodies like Beyonce, Brittney spears, and Jennifer Lopez. Today society wears the things they see on the media but don’t really understand that everything is not always good to imitate. On kids television shows like "Disney Channel " they have this show called thats so raven; where raven always had a date and kissing or also an eposide had to do with racism of her being accused of stealing. Too much internet surfing or just playing video games damaged kids minds where they become anti-social and the child has less friends.
The media uses the feedback loop for positive results in finding what young people like that are ‘cool’. The feedback loop is when let’s say MTV spring break comes on and a couple of girls is watching it, then they go out that
night and do all the things they seen on MTV, and the cameras and video people are at the club see you doing it and it get gets back out to the media like MTV and it just go back around in a loop of how they find interesting ideas.
This all has to do with the amount of television you allow your children to watch. The cool hunters go out and find cool kids and interview them on what they are wearing and why they think it’s cool. In the Documentary, they use focus groups and personal interviews to find cool but once they find cool, that item looses its coolness and the trend dies off. Cool is societies way of being popular to show off the next person, and because they don’t have that shirt Nelly was wearing on MTV sprite event and James in biology did, he was “cool” the media is the problem and we need solutions to figure out how to solve this.
Yes, you can limit what your children watch and wear so they don’t become mooks and midriff. If don’t stop this now society is only going to be mooks and midriffs. We need to ask the media MTV, BET, Nickelodeon and more, to cut down on some things. It’s okay to have update shows. But it’s not okay to all have sex, violence, and cursing on a show. There are still some good kids out there that we can save by cutting down the ‘cool’ aspect of what really is not cool at all. Yes we know there is all those things in society but can the media be one good outlook to help the children who has to see the sex, cursing, and violence all the time. The media can have popular cool shows with out all the extra.Today society needs to know they can make it in society with out trying to out do the next person and themselves.
If we can solve this problem with the media we can get more children that want to go to school to further their education. To learn more than what Beyonce is wearing and how great of artist she is how she manages her career
and how you can do the same, and not by just the clothes she wears to entertain. Also, people can follow their dreams and do what they want and not follow others because they don’t think your dream is as good as their, follow your heart and be your own person and not the medias. Because if you follow the media think is cool, your just going to be another imitator. So, let write letters, send video to show how we fell to the media. Let MTV know that spring break show is over rated and even though some people enjoy its to explicit to be on every day television channel. Marketing is all to get attention and sex is not always a good look. Also , as parents we have to just manage the amount of television , internet , and video games, and etc , that our children use. We can have a time limit on how much the child can watch 11/2 a day, then after that go outside or read. Kids needs something more than just the television and internet. We can try the approach of boycotting television all together for weeks to get medias attention, we can petition these adult like aspect of every ones life. There is a lot you can do but you have to start by picking which one is best for your family and children, be a leader not a follower.
